- EXT. OUTSIDE PARKILL - AGENT'S CAR ON STREET - DAY
-
- Agents Cho and Rollins watch workers go to work in the usual
- routine. Just in front of the car, a Woman lifts a purse to
- her shoulder and crosses the street.
-
- REVERSE ANGLE
-
- The Woman is Jody. Wearing sunglasses, business clothes and
- with her hair tied up, Jody is indistinguishable from the
- suits. She stumbles in the high heels, regains composure,
- and merges into the herd of office workers funneling into
- the ominous Parkill building.
-
- INT. OUTSIDE JACK'S OFFICE - DAY
-
- Jody sits calmly at Diane's desk. Jack breezes by.
-
- JACK
- Morning.
- (disappears into his office)
-
- JODY
- Mor...
- (he's gone)
- ...ning.
-
- Double take. Jack pops his head back around the door.
-
- JACK
- You're...?
-
- JODY
- A temp.
-
- JACK
- Oh...Will Diane be back?
-
- JODY
- (shrugs)
- The agency told me I'd be here a day.
-
- JACK
- Oh, okay. Fine.
-
- He disappears again.
-
- (yelling from the office)
- Can you get me some coffee!?
-
- Grudgingly, Jody rises to do his bidding.
-
-
- INT. JOHN'S HOUSE - DAY
-
- At the hide-out, Diane sips a cup of coffee while ironing
- the wrinkles out of the crumbled copies she sent herself.
- The unpacked vase sits in the half empty box of crumpled
- paper.
-
- The phone RINGS and the answering machine responds. (It's
- counter now indicates 57 messages.)
-
- JOHN'S VOICE (V.O.)
- I'm sedated, inebriated, or otherwise
- incapacitated. Please send for help.
-
- BEEP.
-
- CHO (V.O.)
- (dry)
- John: Agent Cho again. You have the
- number.
-
- INT. OUTSIDE JACK'S OFFICE - DAY
-
- BEEP goes the multi-line phone console. Five lines flash.
-
- JODY
- (into phone)
- I'll transfer you now.
-
- She presses a couple buttons, recoils in dread, then
- cautiously presses another.
-
- JACK (O.S.)
- (gruff, through intercom)
- Yeah.
-
- JODY
- (into phone)
- It's Eric.
-
- JACK
- Eric who?
-
- JODY
- Ah.
-
- JACK
- (pause; frustrated)
- Put him through.
-
- Jody presses a couple buttons and rests the handset on the
- phone. Nothing. No rings.
-
- JACK (O.S.)
- (yelling from office)
- Did you lose him?!
-
- Of course she did.
-
- JODY
- No.
- (beat)
- I think he hung up.
-
- She looks at the phone. None of the lines are flashing.
-
- (to herself)
- They all hung up.
-
- Jack appears at the door.
-
- JACK
- You're not very good with phones, are
- you.
-
- JODY
- Well...
-
- JACK
- Can you type?
-
- JODY
- Yes.
-
- JACK
- Good.
-
- He dumps a 3-inch stack of reports onto her desk.
-
- I'll be back around two.
- (hands her the message pad)
- Just take messages.
-
- LATER
-
- INT. JACK'S OFFICE - DAY
-
- A clock reads: "1:30." Jody sits in Jack's deep, leather
- chair at his desk. She re-assembles his phone.
-
- She pops a disk out of the computer drive and puts it in her
- pocket.
-
- In the background, Jack steps into the doorway. He stops
- and silently watches Jody controlling his computer with
- remarkable dexterity.
-
- JACK
- (calmly)
- What are you doing?
-
- Jody starts. She taps a few keys, then swings around in the
- chair, trying to look innocent. Jack sets down his
- briefcase and approaches Jody. She rises
-
- JODY
- (too fast, guilty)
- I was looking to see if you had the
- reports on disk because it would really
- be a waste to time to re-type them...
-
- JACK
- (indicates for her to sit)
- That's fine.
- (beat)
- I bet you could teach me a lot about my
- computer?
-
- JODY
- Sure. Anything in particular?
-
- Jack crouches next to her and takes control of the mouse.
-
- JACK
- (enthusiastic)
- wor
- work.
-
- JODY
- Well...
- (inspects the modem)
- it's connected to the computer.
- (taps on the keyboard)
- All you need is a terminal program.
-
- Jody searches for something on the computer.
-
- JACK
- (watching the screen)
- What if I wanted to break into another
- computer system?
-
- CUT TO:
-
- EXT. PARKILL BUILDING - SUNRISE
-
- The sun breaks over the horizon.
-
- EXT. OUTSIDE PARKILL - STREET - DAY
-

-
- ELLIS
- (handing off the bag)
- Any sign of Jack?
-
- ROLLINS
- He's still up there.
-
-
- INT. JACK'S OFFICE - EARLY MORNING
-
- The computer makes DIALING TONES.
-
- A weary Jack Cole sits behind the computer. Referring to a

- JACK
- I'm in!
-
- He glides his finger over the screen, reading the text
- carefully.
-
- ON SCREEN
-
- The computer prompts him: "SELECT DIRECTORY: 1) BUDGET
- PROJECTIONS, 2) E-MAIL, OR 3) M&A PROPOSALS."
-
- JACK presses a selection.
-
- JACK
- Damn, this is easy!
-
-
- EXT. OUTSIDE PARKILL - AGENT'S CAR - DAY
-
- From the backseat, Ellis watches his partners fight over the

- switches the station to TALK then RAP.
-
- Cho switches the station to an ALTERNATIVE ROCK station
- playing a promo.
-
- ANNOUNCER (V.O.)
- (pumped up; pitch distorted)
- At KQEZ, we're giving it away every
- week.
-
- THE ROAR OF A REVERING ENGINES RIPS THROUGH THE RADIO PROMO.
-
- When Rollins is about to make another switch, Ellis stops
- her hand.
-
- ELLIS
- Let it be!
-
- Cho and Rollins sulk like scolded children.
-
- DJ (V.O.)
- (excited)
- Hello, who's this?
-
- FEMALE VOICE (V.O.)
- Judy Hunt.
-
- Ellis listens to the radio carefully. Cho turns up the
- volume.
-
- DJ (V.O.)
- Do you know what caller you are?
-
- FEMALE VOICE (V.O.)
- Yes. I'm 102.
-
- DJ (V.O.)
- Judy Hunt, YOU WON!!!
-
- FEMALE VOICE (V.O.)
- (underwhelmed)
- Alright.
-
- All three agents recognize that voice--it's Jody.
-
- ELLIS
- That brazen little hussy!

- win.
-
- CHO stares at the picture--he's seen this car before.
-

-
- ELLIS
- Do you have an address?
-
- PROMOTIONS DIRECTOR
- (flipping through the file)
- No.
-
- CHO
- (remembering)
- I do.
-
-
- INT. OUTSIDE JACK'S OFFICE - DAY
-
- In the corner, the CEO confers with Jack, who wears
- yesterday's suit.
-
- SHARON
- MiniMart's merging?
-
- JACK
- Straight from the source.
-
- SHARON
- (referring to a sheet)
- That's a huge order.
-
- Diane rounds the corner, just arriving to work.
-
- JACK
- (turns to Diane, jovial)
- Good morning, Diane! Glad to have you
- back.
-
- DIANE
- (wary)
- Thank you, Jack.
-
- JACK
- (turning to CEO)
- This one's rock solid.
-
- Just out of listening range, Diane carefully watches the two
- executives.
-
- SHARON
- Alright. I'll put my clients on it as
- well.
-
- CLOSE ON DIANE AT DESK
-
- She dials.
-
- DIANE
- (into phone, hushed)
- Bingo.
-
-

-
- JODY
- (into phone)
- Great. I'm done here. See you soon.
-
- She hangs up and returns to packing when suddenly, AN ALARM
- GOES OFF. The VCR starts to play.
-
- Oh, shit!
-
- EXT. JOHN'S HOUSE - DAY
-
- Ellis runs past the triggered sensor in the front window.
-
- INT. JOHN'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY
-
- Jody panics for a second. In the background, Jody's face
- flashes onto the television and her voice resonates through
- the room.
-
- JODY (V.O.)
- (on television screen)
- Damn, I just left.
- (cocky)
- Sorry to have missed you.
-
- THROUGH THE REAR WINDOW
-
- Jody sees Rollins stalking, gun raised.
-
- BAM! ELLIS BUSTS through the front door.
-
- ROLLINS SMASHES through the patio doors.
-
- JODY BOLTS for the hallway. Rollins and Ellis make chase.
-
-
- EXT. JOHN'S HOUSE - BACKYARD - DAY
-
- JODY crawls out a bedroom window and sprints around the side
- of the house. Cho spots her and follows.
-
- EXT. JOHN'S HOUSE - FRONT - DAY

- U-Haul van, and tackles her against the side of Jody's red,
- Turbo Z.
-
- CHO
- Nice car.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. JOHN'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY
-
- Flanked by Ellis and Rollins, Jody sits quietly on the sofa-
- -defeated. Ellis, holding the VCR remote, kicks up his feet
- up on the coffee table. The frozen image of Jody jitters on
- the TV screen.
-
- ELLIS
- I love this part.
- (un-pauses tape with remote)
-
- ON THE TV SCREEN
-
- JODY (V.O.)
- (smug)
- As you can see, I won't be needing your
- moving services this time.
-
- ELLIS (O.S.)
- Ha!
-
- ELLIS pauses the tape.
-
- (turns to Cho)
- Funny, but a little over-confident.
-
- CHO
- Yeah, real cocky.
-
- Ellis starts the tape again.
-
- JODY (V.O.)
- (on television screen)
- By the fireplace, you'll find the first
- of two installments:...
-
- In the background, Rollins scans a neatly organized stack
- documents by the fireplace.
-
- ...evidence of Jack's dealings with
- fourteen clients of questionable
- reputation. You and your friends at the
- SEC can fight over them.
-
- JODY brews. Ellis stops the tape.
-
- ELLIS
- (to Jody)
- What were you thinking?!
-
- JODY
- (emphatic)
- Ellis, I've got a plan! You've got to
- let me go!
-
- ELLIS
- Now that I've finally got you, you think
- I'm going to let you go?!
-
- JODY
- Just take me to Parkill and give me some
- space; when I need you, I'll signal.
-
- ELLIS
- (indignant)
- YOU will signal US!
-
- JODY
- Trust me on this one!
-
- Ellis laughs and gets up from the sofa. Jody sinks.
-
-
- INT. OFFICE - NIGHT
-
- The halls of the office are empty and quiet, except for a
- TELEVISION in the distance.
-
- INT. OUTSIDE JACK'S OFFICE - NIGHT
-
- Diane stands at her desk, hurriedly collecting her things
- while listening to a phone at her ear.
-
- DIANE
- (anxious)
- Come on, Jody.
-
- The CEO steps into her doorway.
-
- SHARON
- Diane!
-
- Startled, Diane slams down the phone.
-
- Have a good evening.
-
- DIANE
- (recovering)
- Right. Have a safe flight!
-
- Sharon walks off. Diane continues packing, visibly shaken.
-
- Behind her, in Jack's office, a television is on.
-
- NEWSCASTER (V.O.)
- ...Trading was light on the New York
- Stock Exchange. Advances lead declines
- by a margin of 2 to 1.
-
- JACK'S OFFICE - NIGHT
-
- In the foreground, a television is tuned to the Business
- Channel. On screen, a NEWSCASTER reports:
-
- NEWSCASTER
- This afternoon, MiniMart filed for
- bankruptcy under Chapter 11 citing an
- impossible retail market. Their stock
- tumbled to 16 and a half.
-
- The television turns off, revealing the reflection of Jack's
- horrified face.
-
- JACK
- (dumbfounded)
- It's a dog?!
- (goes to computer; turns it on)
- No, no, no, no, no. You were about to
- announce a merger!
-
- INT. OUTSIDE JACK'S OFFICE - NIGHT
-
- At the door, Diane listens to Jack's agony with trepidation.
-
- JACK (O.S.)
- SHIT!
-
- CRASH!
-
- DAMN IT!
-
- THUMP! The shredder BUZZES to life.
-
-
- INT. JACK'S OFFICE - NIGHT
-
- Jack drops the last few pages into the shredder. In a
- panic, he accidentally drops in the cardboard-backed picture
- of his family. He tries to save it but is too slow. BUZZ!
-
- JACK
- (to self; pathetic)
- Bye, bye kids.
-
- The frantic executive opens his safe and pours money and
- documents (list of passwords, secret accounts, Post-It
- notes, etc.) into his open briefcase.
-
- JACK
- (muttering to self)
- Six-hundred thousand shares at 30...
-
- Last, he pulls a gun from the safe and puts it in the
- briefcase.
-
- ...down 14 points...that's...six times
- fourteen...
- (looks to computer; it's not ready)
- ...six times fourteen...24 carry the
- 2...
- (into phone intercom)
- Diane, what's six times fourteen.
-
- DIANE
- (over intercom)
- Eight point four million.
-
- JACK
- Eight million lost in a day! They're
- gonna kill m...
-
- Jack looks toward the door and thinks for a moment.
-
- (into intercom)
- Diane, could you come in here.
-
- In a moment, Diane steps through the door.
-
- JACK
- Remember that report you gave me, the
- one about MiniMart?
-
- DIANE
- Yeah.
-
- JACK
- Where did it come from?
-
- DIANE
- Interoffice mail.
-
- Jack approaches Diane--backing her into a corner.
-
- JACK
- You wrote up that report, didn't you.
-
- DIANE
- What? Mr. Cole. I'm just your
- secretary:...
-
- JACK
- Who are you working with?
-
- DIANE
- ...I sort the mail, type your letters,
- fetch the coffee. What do I know?
-
- JACK
- Enough to ruin me.
-
- Jody enters on cue.
-
- JODY
- (innocent)
- Excuse me, Mr. Cole?
-
- JACK
- You!
-
- Jack leaves Diane and rushes at Jody.
-
- JODY
- (holding out a slip)
- You forgot to sign my timecard.
-
- JACK
- I did everything as you said. I cracked
- the computer. Everything talked about a
- merger, nothing about bankruptcy. It
- was so easy, but the fucking computer
- lied.
-
- JODY
- Mr. Cole, computers don't lie.
-
- JACK
- (frenzied, tapping the screen)
- I saw everything; right on my screen!
-
- Jody inspects the back of the computer system. Spotting
- something, she goes to the wall and lifts a loose telephone
- cord off the floor.
-
- JODY
- That's funny, your computer isn't
- connected to the telephone line.
-
- JACK
- That's not funny!
-
- Jack raises the gun out of his briefcase and shoots the
- computer screen. It IMPLODES in a brilliant blast of
- lights.
-
- That's ridiculous! I was talking to
- their computer half the night!
- (to Jody)
- Your terminal program showed me
- everything!
- (thinks)
- Everything I wanted to see...it was so
- simple...
- (waves gun at Jody)
- You programmed my computer to show me
- phony information!
-
- Diane and Jody exchange looks. Jody holds her car alarm
- remote behind her back.
-
- JODY
- (innocent)
- Clever, huh.
-
- BEHIND JODY'S BACK
-
- Her hand presses the first button on her car alarm remote.
-
- JODY'S LAPTOP COMPUTER,
-
- hidden in a nearby phone closet with other gizmos, begins
- dialing phone numbers.
-
- ON JACK'S DESK
-
- The green "SPEAKERPHONE" light turns on. Then, the
- "CONFERENCE" light.
-
- PAN UP TO JACK
-
- JACK
- (trying to be calm)
- I guess you think this is funny. Funny
- tricks on the boss. Clever games that
- cost THIS COMPANY and ITS CLIENTS
- MILLIONS OF DOLLARS!
-
- Jack waves the gun at them.
-
- DIANE
- The Sharon's gonna be pissed.
-
- INT. LIMOUSINE - NIGHT
-
- RING! The CEO reaches across the luxurious compartment to a
- cellular phone. He answers.
-
- SHARON
- Hello?
-
- JACK (O.S.)
- That ol' windbag will pass a stone when
- she discovers I've sunk this company and
- half her personal clients.
-
- SHARON
- Jack!
-
- EXT. LIMOUSINE ON STREET - NIGHT
-
- SHARON (V.O.)
- Turn this boat around!
-
- The limo pulls a sharp U-turn at 55 mph.
-
- INT. JACK'S OFFICE
-
- Jack packs a few more things into his briefcase while
- holding them under the gun.
-
- JACK
- You really don't know who you're dealing
- with.
-
- JODY'S LAPTOP SCREEN
-
- reports that it is "...connecting Mario Felder to
- call...connecting Milton Weiss to call...", etc.
-
- JODY shrugs.
-
- JODY
- The stooly of a syndicate of dangerous
- and powerful men.
-
- INT. FELDER'S HOUSE - NIGHT
-
- A stocky, well-dressed MAN, only his torso visible, listens
- to the phone. Off-screen, his family chatters in Spanish.
-
- JACK (O.S.)
- Dangerous and powerful men with violent
- fixations.
-
- INT. JACK'S OFFICE - NIGHT
-
- DIANE
- They killed Clay?
-
- INT. ANOTHER HOUSE - FOYER - NIGHT
-
- A MAN in elegant golden pajamas listens to the answering
- machine above a parquet-wood floor.
-
- JACK (O.S.)
- Of course, they killed Clay!
-
- INT. ANOTHER HOUSE - STUDY - NIGHT
-
- With her head obscured by a decorative lamp, A RICH WOMAN
- pets a fluffy cat in her lap while listening to the phone.
-
- JODY (O.S.)
- And when they discover that you've lost
- their millions, they're coming for you.
-
- JACK (O.S.)
- I will be long gone.
-
- INT. FBI VAN - NIGHT
-
- Cho listens to the conversation on a cellular phone.
-
- CHO
- You recording this?
-
- Agent Rollins, at a tape console, nods.
-
- INT. JACK'S OFFICE - NIGHT
-
- Jack picks up a few final things from his desk--notices a
- flashing light on his phone.
-
- ON THE PHONE,
-
- the "CONFERENCE" light is flashing.
-
- JACK picks up the handset.
-
- JACK
- Hello?
-
- A CHORUS OF ANGRY VOICES SCREAMS BACK AT HIM. Jack holds
- the handset at arms length. Panic, realization, then rage.
-
- You...
-
- He raises the gun and waves it back and forth between Diane
- and Jody.
-
- BEHIND HER BACK
-
- Jody presses the second button on the car alarm remote.
-
- THE LIGHTS GO OUT.
-
- Diane and Jody jump away. Jack FIRES and misses.
-
- EXT. PARKILL BUILDING - NIGHT
-
- FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, LIGHTS IN THE PARKILL BUILDING TURN ON,
- VERTICALLY SPELLING OUT: "N-O-W."
-
